M

"M" is a young man, in his early 30s, who has received supports from CSI for nearly ten years.

Ten years ago M was a shy young man with limited skills of daily living. He was already employed at a neighborhood tavern, where he had worked four years and where he continues to work today, ten years later. He also had a committed relationship with K, who M had dated in high school.

With the assistance of his CSI support staff, M learned to utilize the public transportation system
to and from work; cooking and cleaning skills; and socialization skills. He was also given guidance about responsible sexual behavior. In addition to having CSI’s support, M also has had the support of K’s family, which included him as a family member. He visited K’s family home often on weekends and was included in their holiday celebrations.

In the year 2000, K became pregnant. Throughout K’s pregnancy, M was a responsible partner. He attended parenting classes, participated in OB visits to her physician, and attended his son’s birth. Since the baby’s birth (2001), M has remained a most responsible father. He has assisted and continues to assist with the purchase of baby equipment, disposable diapers and other supplies, and otherwise contributes financially to K’s household. CSI staff have served as the baby’s advocate throughout, ensuring that the baby meets all developmental benchmarks, which he has done to date. M and his CSI support team have also accepted responsibility to care for the baby one day/week at M’s apartment. Additionally, M, K, and the baby have had the opportunity to spend time together at M’s apartment.

In late 2001, CSI devised a plan (at the request of the couple), which sought for them to form a household, with CSI supports. While the proposal received preliminary approval from M’s sponsoring public agency, it was eventually declined. M has been patient with that disappointment. In late 2005, M, K and their son, finally had their dream of living together as a family realized. They currently live in what was M’s apartment, with drop by supports from CSI staff. M and K’s wedding is scheduled for November 2007.
